Windows Live Groups: Cool tools for staying connected

Bulletin boards, forums, instant messaging—since its earliest days, the Internet experience has been centered around helping groups of people communicate, collaborate, and share online. Windows Live continues to extend and improve upon this experience with new, integrated features that help you keep your life in sync, while staying in touch with the people you care about.

With the new Windows Live Groups, we’ve released a set of simple tools to help you communicate and share with the “real world” groups that so many of us belong to: sports teams, school committees, neighborhood associations, scout troops, etc.

To be fair, this first release of Groups isn’t trying to be a comprehensive replacement either for large public community forums, or for “badge”-like affiliation groups where millions of people can express their connection to a celebrity or a cause. Those are great and valuable services—they’re just not what we’re aiming at in this first release.

So let’s take a look at what we can do with Windows Live Groups:

Creating a group

Getting started is easy. From Windows Live Messenger, just click the Add menu (the little Messenger icon with the + sign at the top of your contact list), and then click Create a group:

The Create a group command

…or from the Windows Live website, click More at the top of any page, and then click Groups:

The More menu

Then, pick a name and a web address (we also use this for the e-mail distribution list address), choose a theme if you’d like, and you’re ready to go.

Group conversations in Messenger

A unique feature of Windows Live Groups is that the groups you create will automatically show up in Messenger. For smaller groups (up to 20 people), you can even have group conversations with whomever happens to be online. This is great for shooting a quick question, such as asking the other moms in your meet-up group who’s up for a quick park outing during an unexpected sun break here in Seattle. It’s also good for teasing your teammates about last night’s game.

My friend Steven recently created a group for his Saturday morning soccer club, for the parents of his daughter’s pre-kindergarten class, and for his poker buddies.

When Steven created his poker group,  he immediately saw it appear in his main window in Messenger (it also shows up on the web on his Groups page). He can expand the group, see who else has joined recently, and start conversations with those people.

Right-clicking a group in Messenger

When 2 or more people from a group come online, he can double-click on the group and bring up the conversation window with everyone who is online.  He can send winks, emoticons and even nudge the group Messenger window just like in a regular IM conversation.

Chatting with a group

Of course, as the owner of a group, you can turn off the Messenger conversation feature, if that’s what your members prefer, or if the group grows to more than 20 people – just click Options on your group’s web site, and then click Edit Settings.

Scheduling events in your shared group calendar

Groups also include a shared calendar, which is automatically linked to your personal calendar on Windows Live.

Just click Calendar from the navigation links on the left of your group’s website, and you’ll be able to see the calendar for that group:

A group's calendar

Or, to see how your calendar looks and find out if you have time to make it to all of the events that your groups are scheduling, just click More at the top of any Windows Live webpage, and then click Calendar.  You can easily hide or show individual calendars, etc.

All your calendars in one place

Sharing photos, files, and discussions

It’s also easy to share photos or files with the members of your group, and to post ongoing discussions.

Just like with your personal profile on Windows Live, you can just choose Photos or SkyDrive from the navigation links on the left of your group, and post pictures, team rosters, to-do lists, and even shared web links. When you post things, the info shows up in the “What’s new” list on the group’s main webpage, and will show up on the Windows Live Home page for all of the members of the group.

We’re just getting started with Groups.  We hope you enjoy this first round of features and find them to be useful online tools for your real-world groups.

International Gathering Moriah Chapel April 2009-Andrew Strom

27 12 2008

EXCITING NEWS – INTERNATIONAL GATHERING in APRIL
-AT MORIAH CHAPEL, WALES – Where Welsh Revival Began
I will publish details shortly, but I just wanted to let people know
that this Gathering is taking place. I have been deeply burdened
for Wales lately, so I am truly delighted to be able to confirm that
it is happening.
Moriah Chapel was the place where the Welsh Revival broke out
in 1904. It seats around 500 people – and was the home base for
Evan Roberts (the Welsh Revivalist). When I was ministering in
Wales in November we visited Moriah and I got talking to the man
there. Somehow we began to discuss holding a Gathering in the
Chapel for preaching and prayer. It is a very rare opportunity, and
I have been astonished that it is even happening! But we have
been given the Chapel to use for such an event in the first
weekend of April 2009. (Naturally it will be free-entry).
There will be prayer. There will be preaching. I believe it will be
a truly international gathering. People from other nations have
already said they want to be there. David Servant (USA) has
confirmed he is available to speak, along with a well-known
Holiness preacher from Denmark – and more. But really it is an
opportunity to seek God and hear His heart – and to pray for
nations like Wales that have tragically lost their Revivals. How
we need to pray for these places!
Even if you are in other countries, please seek God to see if He
wants you at this Gathering, my friends. I believe it could be important.
Further "official" announcements of the details will follow shortly on
this List. Please look out for these.
God bless you, and Thankyou for your prayers,
Andrew Strom.

2009 The Passover year

26 12 2008

breakthrough

I was preaching just recently in Vila do Conde, northern Portugal, concerning 2009, the anxieties of entering the new Year. I used the analogy, of Exodus 12 and the Passover, being this a PASSOVER YEAR. That as the Church we are on a SYMBOLIC JOURNEY…from the world, to the Promised Land, our spiritual Canaan. That 2010 will be a year of INHERITANCE.

Look for Vila do Conde. I can assure you, being by the sea at this time of year is no joke…very cold.

The Lie concerning 2009

19 12 2008

Dear Brethren,
I am writing to declare what God has told me about 2009. There are so many lies from the press and from the media, that it is putting to the test the faith and mostly exhausted state concerning the year. They are declaring that the year shall be the darkest financially speaking. The Lord has told me specifically to preach concerning the prophetic scripture based in Exodus 12, concerning the passover.
The Lord says that 2009 is the year of "The Passover." He says that there shall be a coming together of believers in a conviction that the whole concept of fellowship and unity should be rethought. There shall be needed a whole new reappraisal on being a spiritual family. The Lord is allowing a great famine to come on the earth, in the shape of an angel, that passes over. This shall execute the judgments of the Lord. But those covered under the Covenant Blood of Jesus Christ, the Pascal Lamb, spoken of in Exodus 12 shall be spared. They shall know the protection of the Lord. They will need to be prepared, with their belts of truth girded, and to get a notion that we are "passing over."
Before the actual passing over, which is the Church being caught up, God will transfer into the hands of trusted believers great riches, there shall be a spoiling, like has never been seen. 2009 is a preparation in this. Congregations which do not practice the lifestyle of true brotherly love, and true fellowship cannot "eat of the lamb." Eating of the lamb, must be done quickly, because the eating of the "Lamb" must be done in family, and must not be left anything. Or it should be burned. The Lord says that once congregations of His Church come into the true koinonia, then they can eat of Christ. This means that Christ’s manifestation shall come into the midst of the congregation. It means that they shall be ready, because the Church shall leave this "Egypt" suddenly.
I preached this message last night at Vila do Conde Assemblies of God Church, Northern Portugal, last night, it was accompanied by a great presence of the Lord. The Lord is about to mark 2009 as a great YEAR OF REVIVAL. It is not going to be the worst year…it is going to be the best year.

The angel that passes over

18 12 2008

Everyone speaks of crisis, crisis economically, crisis in the family, youth, children, of values.

Crisis is an angel which executes a predetermined judgment over Egypt. Egypt is symbolic of the world. The “children of Israel” are those who are in the world but their destiny is not part of it. Therefore God has many purposes with them.

First He makes them come into community, into family, a transitioning between family and nation. The main focus being the “Lamb” for which must be accompanied by Unleavened Bread, and eaten up. The unleavened Bread is the bitter bread, reminding them of their former existence, and getting them to think of their vision.

They must spread the blood, freshly taken from the Lamb and smear it on their doorposts…so that when the Angel passes they are excluded from the judgments.

This is a prophetic word for today. This is for us. We must come into COMMUNITY AND UNITY…FAMILY, so that we partake of the “Lamb” in its true sense. Then when the judgments rage over the earth, so God will arrange a transference of wealth unimaginable to the saints. I believe we are in that season now.

This will be my message for tonight in Vila do Conde, Portugal.
